When I first found out I was pregnant with Mason I pretty much spent every spare minute I had researching. I’m a control freak planner by nature and wanted to learn as much as I could to help navigate this new journey in to motherhood. From pregnancy and birth through to sleeping aids and breast pumps, I read it all! But I definitely focussed the most on the health of my baby.

It can be a little scary and overwhelming when you look in to all of the potentially harmful ingredients and products out there but even making small changes can help keep our babies environment healthier. So for all you mamas out there like me, here are my top tips to help you create a non-toxic nursery for your bubba.

FURNITURE

Look for cots and other furniture items such as dressers and drawers that are raw wood or that have been finished with a no-voc paint or non-toxic/natural sealer. Any furniture that is Greenguard certified is a fantastic option as this means it has low chemical emissions. This includes upholstered armchairs and rockers. Avoid any chairs or furniture items that are fire retardant as they contain harmful chemicals.

Second hand or vintage wooden furniture can be another great option if you sand it back and finish it with a non-toxic paint or finish. Chalk paint is fantastic for up-cycling furniture and super easy to use. Steer clear of vintage cots as they may not adhere to safety standards amd are often covered in lead paint.

BEDDING

Considering they spend most of their time sleeping, investing in toxic-free bedding for our babes is definitely worth it. You can buy organic mattresses from here or for a more budget friendly option you can purchase an organic protective cover to put over a regular mattress. This will help to block out dust mites and off-gassing chemicals. Organic pillows and quilts are also great for when your little one is not so little anymore.

For bed linen and change mat covers look for GOTS certified/organic materials or natural fibres such as bamboo, muslin and linen. There are SO many gorgeous organic and natural baby bedding options available now so you can easily find something to suit any style. Once again though, avoid flame-retardant fabrics.

PAINT

Paint contains toxic emissions that can off-gas for a long time after you’ve applied them to your walls. For use in nurseries and kids rooms it’s always best to stick to No-VOC paint. Plan to get the painting done as long before bubs arrival as you can and make sure you leave the windows open during and after application so the fumes can escape easily.

RUGS

For non-toxic rugs you’re better off sticking with natural fibres such as wool, cotton, hemp and jute. It’s also important that the rugs have been ethically and sustainably made, that way you know that the products and processes used have met stringent standards.

DECOR

For toys and decor items look for minimal, natural and organic options. Opt for natural fibres, organic cotton, wool and wood over plastic and shop small and hand-made businesses. Instagram is a gold mine for beautiful hand-made and ethical baby decor and there are lots of gorgeous boutiques (both online and bricks & mortar) who have a wonderful selection of non-toxic baby brands.

Just two last little tips! Think about adding a plant or two in the room to help purify the air and don’t forget to open the windows regularly to keep the space well ventilated and the air nice and fresh.
